MRI Angiography

Angiography is a medical imaging procedure that uses a contrast agent and X-rays to visualize blood vessels in various parts of the body. It provides detailed images of the blood vessels, allowing healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat conditions related to the circulatory system.

  • There are several reasons why MRI angiography may be recommended:

    1. Diagnosis of Vascular Conditions: Angiography can help identify and evaluate conditions such as blockages, narrowing, or abnormalities in blood vessels. It is commonly used to diagnose conditions like atherosclerosis, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and peripheral artery disease.
Preoperative Planning: In some cases, angiography is performed before surgery to help surgeons understand the anatomy and location of blood vessels, particularly in complex procedures
  • The preparation for an angiography may include:

    1. Fasting: You may be instructed to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the procedure, especially if the angiography involves the use of sedation or anesthesia.
    2. Medications and Allergies: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. It is also important to inform your healthcare provider about any known allergies, especially to contrast agents.
    3. Medical History: Provide your complete medical history, including any previous surgeries, allergies, or existing medical conditions, such as kidney disease or diabetes. This information is crucial for assessing the risks and determining the appropriate course of action during the procedure.
    4. Contrast Agent: Angiography typically involves the use of a contrast agent, which helps visualize the blood vessels. If you have a known allergy to contrast agents, your healthcare provider will take necessary precautions or consider alternative imaging techniques.
    5. Clothing and Valuables: You will be asked to change into a hospital gown before the procedure, so it is advisable to wear loose, comfortable clothing to the hospital. Leave any valuables or jewelry at home to avoid misplacement or interference with the imaging equipment.

Your healthcare provider will provide you with specific instructions based on your individual case. It is important to follow these instructions closely to ensure a successful and safe angiography procedure.
