Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Non-invasive imaging using magnetic fields

MRU

MRU stands for Magnetic Resonance Urography. It is a specialized imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. MRU is primarily used to evaluate and diagnose conditions affecting the urinary system.

  • There are several reasons why an MRU may be recommended:

    1. Kidney Evaluation: MRU provides detailed images of the kidneys, allowing for the detection of abnormalities such as kidney stones, cysts, tumors, or blockages.
    2. Urinary Tract Obstruction: MRU can help identify and evaluate any obstructions or narrowing in the urinary tract, such as ureteral strictures or urethral strictures.
    3. Urinary Tract Infections: MRU may be used to assess the extent and severity of urinary tract infections and identify the presence of abscesses or other complications.
    4. Preoperative Planning: In some cases, MRU is performed before surgery to assess the anatomy of the urinary system and aid in surgical planning.

Allergies: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are currently taking, as well as any known allergies, especially to contrast agents. Some MRU exams may require the use of a contrast agent injected intravenously to enhance the visibility of the urinary structures.

    1. Metal Objects: Remove all metal objects, including jewelry, watches, piercings, and removable dental work, as they can interfere with the magnetic field. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown before the procedure.
    2. Communicate with your healthcare provider: It is important to inform your healthcare provider about any existing health conditions or concerns before the MRU. This includes pregnancy, claustrophobia, or any implanted medical devices or metal fragments in your body.
