Ultrasound

Sound-based medical imaging technique.

Arterial & venous Doppler

Arterial and venous Doppler ultrasound are medical procedures that use ultrasound technology to evaluate the blood flow in the arteries and veins of the body. They are non-invasive tests that provide information about the health and function of the blood vessels.

  1. Arterial Doppler ultrasound: This procedure is used to assess blood flow in the arteries. It can help diagnose conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), arterial blockages, or narrowing (stenosis), aneurysms, and blood clots (thrombosis). Arterial Doppler ultrasound is commonly performed on the arteries of the legs, arms, neck, and abdomen.
  2. Venous Doppler ultrasound: This procedure is used to evaluate blood flow in the veins. It can help diagnose conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), varicose veins, venous insufficiency, or venous blockages. Venous Doppler ultrasound is often performed on the veins of the legs, arms, and neck.
  1. Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined. You may be asked to remove any clothing, jewelry, or accessories that could interfere with the ultrasound examination.
  2. Fasting: In most cases, no fasting is required for arterial or venous Doppler ultrasound. You can usually eat and drink normally before the procedure.
  3. Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, including blood-thinning medications. They will provide guidance on whether you need to adjust or temporarily stop any medications before the test.

During the procedure, a gel will be applied to the skin over the area being examined. The ultrasound doctor will use a handheld device called a transducer to capture images of the blood vessels. The transducer emits sound waves that bounce off the blood cells and vessels, creating real-time images on a monitor. The doctor may also use Doppler technology to assess the direction and speed of blood flow.

Arterial and venous Doppler ultrasound are generally safe and painless procedures.

It is important to follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider for the preparation and procedure of arterial or venous Doppler ultrasound. If you have any concerns or questions, it is recommended to discuss them with your healthcare provider before the examination.
