Ultrasound

Sound-based medical imaging technique.

Neck ultrasound

Neck ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that uses ultrasound waves to examine the structures in the neck region, such as the thyroid gland, lymph nodes, blood vessels, and soft tissues. It is a non-invasive and safe imaging technique that provides detailed information about the neck organs and helps in the evaluation of various conditions.

  1. Thyroid abnormalities: It is commonly used to assess the size, shape, and texture of the thyroid gland. It can detect nodules, cysts, or other abnormalities that may indicate thyroid disorders, including thyroid cancer.
  2. Lymph node evaluation: Neck ultrasound can help in assessing the size and characteristics of lymph nodes in the neck. Enlarged or abnormal lymph nodes may indicate infection, inflammation, or malignancy.
  3. Vascular assessment: It can provide information about the blood vessels in the neck, such as the carotid arteries and jugular veins. It can detect narrowing or blockages in the arteries, as well as identify blood clots or aneurysms.
  4. Soft tissue evaluation: Neck ultrasound can evaluate the soft tissues in the neck, including muscles, salivary glands, and the presence of any masses or abnormalities.
  1. Clothing: Wear loose and comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the neck area. You may be asked to remove any jewelry or accessories around the neck.
  2. Fasting: In most cases, no fasting or dietary restrictions are necessary before a neck ultrasound. You can eat and drink normally.
  3. Medications: Continue taking your regular medications unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.
  4. Inform the doctor: about any previous neck surgeries, medical conditions, or concerns you may have.

During the procedure, you will be asked to lie on your back on an examination table. The technologist will apply a gel to the neck area and use a handheld device called a transducer to move over the skin. The transducer emits sound waves that create images on a monitor, which the technologist will interpret and document.

After the examination, the images will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will generate a report. Your healthcare provider will discuss the results with you and recommend any further actions based on the findings.

Remember to consult with your healthcare provider for specific instructions and any additional preparations you need to undertake before a neck ultrasound.
